3 of 22 Beachy Wedding Backdrop Breezy fabric, crisp flags and programs, and a sunny palette will keep a subtle nautical theme afloat near the ocean. Drape striped cloth (we used nautical bunting) over a rope, and secure it with fabric tape to turn whitewashed dowels into a billowing backdrop. Fold a flag over each chair, and hang matching banners along the aisle. Photography: James Merrell More DIY Beach Wedding Ideas

4 of 22 Wallpaper Wedding Backdrop A trio of coordinating patterns creates a personalized spot to say “I  do.” To make the valance, affix wallpaper to foam board with spray adhesive. The aisle runner? Double-stick-tape a roll to the floor. And for each chair cover, drape a strip over the back, punch two holes in each end, and tie on a ribbon. 13 of 22 Still-Life Wedding Backdrop These calamondin trees (a cross between a mandarin and kumquat tree), set in bright blue stone vessels, were amped up by adding extra mandarin oranges. Just cut five-inch lengths of wire, poke them through the fruit, and wrap the ends around a branch to secure. The trick is to loosely cluster the fruit in groups of two or three, which is how they grow naturally. To make the aisle runner, stencil a swath of linen with blue acrylic paint applied using a triangular cosmetics sponge. For added depth, dab on a coat of light ultramarine blue, then add a deeper cobalt shade. Photography: Raymond Hom More Orange and Blue Wedding Ideas

14 of 22 “Welcome to Wonderland” Wedding Backdrop It may take guests’ eyes a second to adjust when they step into this ceremony space. Even you, while gliding along a geometrically printed runner, might wonder: “Is this a dream?” Rest assured you’re not falling down the rabbit hole, just walking down a fanciful aisle. Those mazelike boxwood hedges in fiberglass urns? They’re not an oasis that’s going to vanish. (They’ll also last forever—they’re made of plastic, so they can create a secret garden anywhere, inside or out.) And that optical illusion–y aisle is actually panels of durable (and water-resistant) repositionable wallpaper. As for exchanging vows with your sweetheart in such otherworldly surroundings? That’s not an illusion, either. More Pink and Green Wedding Ideas

15 of 22 Carnation Canopy Wedding Backdrop Saying “I do” before an ethereal curtain of carnations? Pure heaven. Each of these garlands was hand-strung and draped over a dowel suspended from the ceiling. To go the DIY route, you’ll need monofilament, a large needle, and about 1,000 carnations (order them through The Grower’s Box). Make the strands a day or two in advance and store them in a fridge. “After your vows, use them to decorate the bar,” suggests floral designer Ariella Chezar, who created the display. 7 of 22 Birch Wedding Backdrop Warm, intimate, and positively glowing, a fireplace full of birch logs and candles will set the tone for an enchanted event in a cool-weather locale. Set small and large unscented white candles (in glass cylinders, as many venues don’t allow open flames) on trimmed birch branches. Pave your way with white felt, and place candles on thick slices of birch to cap the ends of every row. Photography: James Merrell

10 of 22 Troupe L’oeil Wedding Backdrop Black, white, and gray all over, custom-printed trompe l’oeil screens will bring sophistication, drama, and optical illusions to a sleek urban setting. We used a sketch of Versailles, but you can choose any image you like. Have it printed over multiple shades, and stagger them to create a 3-D effect. Photography: James Merrell
